Spanish ace for Sophie
Dateline: November 2005 - La Managa Club, Spain
Twelve-year old Sophie Godley made
YMG history on Sunday when she became the first player
to score a hole-in-one at the Grand Final of the YMG
Junior Masters.
Sophie, who plays at the Barlbrough Links Golf Club
in Derbyshire, scored the ace on the second hole of
the 18 hole YMG Junior Masters 2005 Grand Final over
the championship South Course at the La Manga Club in
Spain, where she joined 19 other youngsters all bidding
to become the YMG Masters Champion.
"My first hole-in-one"
"It's my first hole-in-one," admitted Sophie, "but the
second for my family as my Dad has scored a hole-in-one
as well." However, while Sophie's dad Chris Godley had
only his playing partner to witness his ace, Sophie's
was acheived in front of a gallery of supporters following
the Junior Masters finalists. She went on to finish
joint 3rd in the Grand Final.
The hole-in-one was also cause for celebration for the
La Manga Club too, as it was only the second hole-in-one
on that hole since the championship course was revamped
several years ago.
Excellent year...
For Sophie the YMG Grand Final is the culmination of
another excellent year's golf, which has seen her lower
her handicap to 11; play for her club and county; and
complete her Masters level of the YMG Junior Golf programme
under the watchful eye of Barlborough Links PGA professional
Lysa Jones.
