FAQs
Q. What does YMG stand for?
A. YMG means 'Young Masters Golf' and it is a junior
golf development programme designed to help more youngsters
get into the great sport of golf.
Q. Is YMG suitable for
girls and boys?
A. Yes. YMG welcomes both girls and boys to get into
golf.
Q. How old must I be
to start the YMG Junior Golf programme?
A. The recommended age range for the YMG Junior Golf
programme is 5 to 16 years old. However, we have had
children as young as 3 years of age who have joined
the programme and progressed brilliantly. As they say,
the younger you start any sport, the better it is. We
recommend you find your local YMG Junior Academy in
the 'Find a Club'
section and give them a call for their advice.

Q. I already play golf.
Is YMG suitable for me?
A. Absolutely. You'll learn so much from the YMG programme
and, depending on how long you have been playing, you
don't necessarily have to start at Cadets level. However,
we have heard from hundreds of youngsters who, despite
having played for some time, started YMG at Cadets and
said they learned so much from working their way through
the entire programme that they would recommend all players
would benefit from starting at Cadets. Speak to your
YMG PGA Pro for advice.
Q. Who will teach me
golf?
A. You will be taught by a registered PGA Professional
coach. For more information about PGA coaches running
the YMG programme, visit our 'Learn
from PGA Pros' page, or visit the PGA website
at www.pga.info.
Q. What is a PGA Pro?
A. PGA professional coaches are trained by the Professional
Golfers Association and are respected the world over
for their outstanding coaching skills.

Q. Isn't golf a stuffy
game for old men?
A. Are you kidding! Golf is the coolest sport in the
world for everyone to play. Just look at some of the
people who play it - pop and rock stars, TV personalities,
celebrities and some of the leading footballers, tennis
players, rugby players and scores of other top sports
people. And what about Tiger Woods? Just about the coolest
sportsman on the face of the planet!
Years ago golf was often seen as a stuffy game played
by stuffy old people at stuffy golf clubs. But that
has all changed now and it just plain off the thermometer
COOL!!!!
Q. When does YMG run?
A. Many YMG Academies run YMG course throughout the
year. Speak to you local YMG
Junior Golf Academy for details, but you'll find
most clubs starting new Cadets classes every few months.

Q. Is there a YMG Junior
Golf Academy near me?
It is a pretty safe bet to say yes. Currently there
are over 600 golf clubs and driving ranges in the United
Kingdom and Ireland running the YMG Junior Golf programme,
so there's a great chance that there's one near you.
Check out the 'Find
a YMG Club' section on this website.
Q. Do I need golf
clubs to start YMG?
A. No. You YMG PGA Pro will provide you with what you
need to get started in your first course. If, after
a while, you think you'd like to buy your own golf clubs
or gear, then your YMG PGA Pro can help you make the
right choice as they are expects in golf equipment as
well as experts in golf coaching. Whatever you need
to know about golf, always ask your PGA Pro.

Q. Will I be able
to take part in tournaments?
A. You sure will. Every year YMG runs the brilliant
YMG Junior Masters tournaments at locations up and down
the UK and Ireland and they are fantastic fun to take
part in, whatever standard you have reached. Also most
local clubs run their own junior events throughout the
year, while during the season you can check our the
'Tournaments'
section on the YMG website for information about junior
open events that you can play in at clubs in your region.
Q. What is a golf
handicap?
A. A handicap is a way of showing the number of shots
a golfer is expected to take playing a round of golf
in relation to the par of the course. The better a player
gets, the lower their handicap becomes (so a play with
a 5 handicap has achieved a higher standard than a player
with a handicap of 25 for instance). It´s a clever
way of compensating the players with a number of strokes
so that players of differing abilities can then compete
fairly against one another and enjoy the game.
